Song...

THAT song was the march in song for the solemnisation for the couple that i shot today... was stunned momentarily when i heard it, from the first bar of the piano...

if this is a sign, it's TOO obvious! but it's a good one. sometimes, just take it at face value, there's nothing else telling me to do otherwise.

ok, back to earth, here's the pudding:

Mr. Joho, there are couple of questions I need to ask from you regarding DSLR.

1. Lens kit supplied to entry level DSLR like Canon 400D is 18-55mm, means that this is a very short range, same as optical zoom 0x - 2x. Do I need to buy more telephoto zoom lenses with longer range? (like 10x on DC optical zoom)?

2. DSLR with image stabilizer is better or just tuning up the ISO settings? But high ISO increases noise and not as effective as image stabilzer?

3. Canon kit lens is 18-55mm and Nikon D80 kit lens is 18 - 200mm, does this means that Nikon is suit for more zoom range? But large zoom kit lens is not as good quality as small zoom kit lens?

hi 老星洲,

1. if you wanna calculate zoom in "times" (1x 2x) it is done this way, Z = (longest focal length) / (shortest focal length), where z is the "times of zoom". in the lens u mentioned, it would be 55/18 which is abut 3x. it's is purely academic, imo. the "raw numbers" as in the focal length in mm is more impt. as for how much zoom range u need, depends on what you're shooting. for my main work, which is weddings, i stay within 17-85 (over various lenses, zoom or prime) around 95% of the time.

2. i assume u compared image stabilisers vs iso to compensate for shutter speed. again it depends on what u are shooting. u can have the slowest shutter speed with the best image stabiliser but if u are shooting moving objects and don't want motion blur, it won't serve ur purpose. and the most common moving object: people. most pple look blur no matter how still they are at anything slower than around 1/10 shutter speed, say for a half body shot. another more "cheem" thing about whether something is sharp or blur is "circle of confusion" which, if u do a search, u'll come up with something very complicated which i won't bother to explain here.

3. i didn't know that the d80 shipped with the 18-200 as the kit lens? anyway regardless, the capability of a brand to handle zoom range is not related to the lens it ships with. of course if the nikon ships with 18-200 in the kit u do have that longer zoom range "right out of the box". altho i really don't think the nikon ships with that lens? i'm not sure if canon has it's own 18-200, but i know third party lenses make it for the canon mount, so stick that on the canon and u can have the same zoom capability. on a side note, these lenses are generally not great in quality, and with HUGE zoom ranges like that, the "real zoom" that u get (we call it "field of view") depends on the focus distance. 200mm for these lenses isn't always 200mm, if you're not focused at infinity.

perhaps instead of technical questions which will get u technical answers, u could share with me what u like or want to shoot and i would be able to share with u real world examples, either by writing, or thru images, if i have them, and/or can find them! =)

Which means that the 18-55mm in Canon kit lens will be 3x optical zoom as on Digital Camera.

I assure that you that Nikon does really ship the D80 together with the 18-200mm lens kit.

I think D80's lens kit is better since it can zoom very far away. Another word for this, save up money to buy extra telephoto lenses as on Canon short zoom 3x kit lens.

I made a mistake here:

Nikon D80's kit lens is 18-135mm.
